A new trend known as “Flop Friday” is gaining attention among students throughout schools across Long Island, especially with the recent hot weather. This trend encourages teens to wear flip-flops to school and throughout the summer as a fun way to stay comfortable while also participating in fun activities with friends. “Flop Friday” has spread quickly through student posts and short videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Many students say the trend adds a lighthearted break to the school week, and creates a sense of community. In recent weeks, hallways have become filled with colorful flip-flops, with some students even coordinating their outfits around them. English teacher Shannon Handley described the idea as “a cute way to celebrate the season,” explaining how students enjoy wearing flip-flops because they “keep them cool as the classrooms start to heat up.”
Others have joined and embraced the trend because of how fun and simple it is. It shows a new way for people to celebrate the upcoming summer with friends.
Junior Lucy Termini said she first heard about “Flop Friday” through social media and thinks “it’s fun, and I’m happy that flip-flops are trending again.” She added that although the warmer weather has helped the trend grow, students had already started wearing flip flops months earlier, showing excitement for the summer to begin.
