Girls’ Cross Country continues their undefeated season with a record of 10-0. From their first race back in September to almost the end of the season, they have remained unbeatable. As the girls head into the post season, being undefeated is not the main focus anymore. Led by Winter and Spring All-State runner Maggie McCormick, and XC All-League runners Riley Shoemaker, Juliana Trotta, Kaylin Garcia and Ryan Cruickshank, the Girls’ Cross Country team has put their focus on divisions, counties, states, and even nationals.
This undefeated season wasn’t given to these girls, they earned it. The Bay Shore Girls’ Cross Country team is led by Coach Lewis. He pushes his runners, whether it is practice, on the road, on the track, or dominating at competitions.
“To be undefeated is a feat that is accomplished only through the combined efforts of the girls,” said Lewis. “Three times a week all summer, starting at 6:50 am, countless miles. I think I tallied over 600+ miles altogether just in the first month of training.”
Past experiences have taught the girls how to maneuver this season. Senior Maggie McCormick knows what it feels like to win and is even more determined to continue winning.
“Being undefeated this season was so rewarding and is only encouraging our team to reach for more,” said McCormick. “The tough and long practices throughout the summer and after school were the stepping stones to help us win the league championship, and we could not be happier to see our hard work finally pay off.”
Senior Jade Fagan has been running cross country for four years and has been on the varsity team since 8th grade. She understands the importance of working together as a team.
“Being undefeated this season as a team together was amazing knowing the hard work and practice we all put together as a team but also the work individually making this such a great experience for most of us,” said Fagan.
Bay Shore Girls’ Cross Country has a long history of winning counties, leagues, divisions, and even nationals, but this season is one to remember with experienced upperclassmen and a mix of talented underclassmen. The girls are ready for an strong postseason run, as well as setting up for success next year.
As the post season starts, Bay Shore runners will be a top seed. With runners like Maggie McCormick, Riley Shoemaker, and Juliana Trotta, the Marauders show no sign of slowing down.
