With pom-poms in hand and energy to spare, the cheerleading team is ready to kick off another exciting season. As they practice high-flying stunts, intricate routines, and crowd-rousing cheers, the team is determined to bring the school’s spirit to new heights this year.
Under the leadership of coach Jackie Phillips and team captains Kayla Durant and Star Dubendorf, the cheerleading team has been hard at work preparing for pep rally and football games this season. They work hard, but also balance lighthearted activity in the process.
¨I try to have fun with them. It’s a sport, it’s hard work, but if you can´t find the fun in it, what’s the point?¨ said Junior Kayla Durant.
The team practices several times a week, focusing not only on physical perfection but also team chemistry. In addition to supporting the school’s athletic teams, the squad also plays a key role in adding school spirit amidst the season.
Durant said ¨I love the cheer season because it allows us to enjoy the sport that we all love while getting to show the school and the community what Bay Shore is all about.¨
From leading chants on the field to just showing spirit walking through the hallways in their uniforms, the team is always trying to find ways to engage with students and create a positive environment. When asked about the support given by the student body, Durant and Dubendorf had this to say, ¨We feel that we put so much effort into what we do at each competition and each football game but we don´t receive as much credit that we deserve.”
The end of fall sports season is quickly approaching. The cheerleaders now hope to see the stands packed with students and fans as they cheer on our athletes and showcase their hard-earned skills. So grab your maroon and white, get ready to shout, and come support the team as they show us what true school spirit looks like! Go Mauraders!
